Messy Desks
NEW! - 6/23/01 - Got bored tonight and totally redid the site's backend. It used to be static html pages (which actually still exist, though I might delete them eventually), but now I made the site into a php powered front end using a sql backend for all it's data (pictures aren't actually _in_ the db yet, though I might do that in the future sometime). This doesn't actually do anything for the site, short of making maintenence easier once I get around to writing a front end for this, however, I think it's pretty cool. Let me know if anything's broken.
Well, there isn't much here yet, but let me explain the concept. I had
just gotten a digital camera, and had it at work. I took some pictures,
including one of my desk. Now my desk is usually a mess, even worse than
in the picture below, and I talk to a lot of customers who say that they
have messy desks at work as well. So I thought it would make one of those
cool, useless sites to have people submit pictures of their messy desks.
So, if you have a picture of a desk that has paper, memos, catalogs, magazines,
pens, pencils, staples, tacks (ouch), coffee, etc... all over it, send
them to messydesks@thegovernment.net
and I'll post them. Before you do, here are some basic guidelines to prevent
this getting out of hand:
-
Please submit images in JPG or GIF format. PNG is ok too, but the
other 2 are preferred.
-
Please make sure your image isn't more than 250KB big. This is for
a few reasons, the primary being that I download my mail from home over
a modem, so large messages can really clog things up.
-
Please only submit one (1) picture. Right now, I'm doing this totally
by hand, and I can't sort through several pictures from of the same desk.
If there's a problem with the picture, I'll e-mail you and let you know,
which brings me to my next point...
-
Please make sure you use a valid e-mail address. If you use any
kind of spam blocking or address munging and I need to contact you, I'll
delete your mail. I don't spam people, this is a private e-mail box that
only I will ever see, so you won't get spam from me.
-
Please specifiy any particular description or caption you would like
to see for your picture. Let me know whether it's OK to use your name
and/or e-mail address, or if you want to use some sort of nickname or handle/screen
name instead. I'm flexible. If you want to remain anonymous, please let
me know.
-
Please don't ask when your picture will be posted. I'm doing this
during my free time (which sometimes is non-exisitant), I'll get to it
when I can. It may take a few days/months/years/millenia, so be patient.
If you want to be notified when I post your picture, let me know in your
picture e-mail.
-
Lastly, I reserve the right to modify pictures you submit. The main
reason I would edit a picture is in case it has anything that looks like
personal info in it, or to crop or resize the image to fit the page, or
to reduce it's size for thumbnails. For the most part, the image should
look almost exactly the same as it was submitted to me.
I'm dividing the site up into multiple pages. I haven't finalized the design,
but here are the desks I have in place now:
